Both high flow nasal cannula therapy and ordinary nasal cannula oxygen inhalation are to inhale oxygen through nasal congestion. Normally, the gas provided by the high flow nasal cannula machine will be mixed with air and oxygen according to the set concentration during output, and the output flow of 8-80L/min can be higher than the patient's maximum inspiratory flow (gas flow rate ≥ patient inspiratory peak flow rate) to meet all inhalations. The air volume is not diluted by the surrounding air, and the inhaled oxygen concentration is controllable at 21%-100%, and does not change with the patient's breathing state.

 

In contrast, nasal catheter oxygen inhalation is a low-flow oxygen therapy system, and the maximum oxygen flow rate is only 10 + L/min, which cannot meet the patient's peak inspiratory flow rate. Then the patient's breathing rate is faster or the tidal volume is larger. In this case, the inhaled oxygen concentration is very unstable.

 

There are also patients with bronchiectasis or pulmonary cystic fibrosis, even if the patients themselves do not need high oxygen concentration support, they also need better airway humidification management.
